Mistakes and Epiphanies (Casey/Dana, PG)
TITLE: Mistakes and Epiphanies
FANDOM: Sports Night
PAIRING: Casey McCall/Dana Whitaker
GENRE: Romance
SUMMARY: Casey meets up with Dana after the show to discuss... everything. Takes place after 2x02 "Something Wicked This Way Comes".
DISCLAIMER: Not mine! Never have been, and never will be! Still broke, still little old me.
NOTES: This was written for kindness_says for the Holiday Advent Calendar 2011. The prompt was "There Is Nothing Final About A Mistake (Except Its Being Taken As
Final)". It's my first Sports Night fic and it was SO MUCH FUN to write. Hope you like it!

“I want to kill you right now!”

“Problem is, that's not the only thing you want to do with me right now, is it?”

Casey joked around with Dan about it earlier, but his ‘street cred’ wasn’t a concern. Dana, however, was. Dana was right. He began dating Lisa when he was 18, and married her at 23. It was a mistake. But he had another chance. Another chance with Dana. The kiss was mindblowing. It was superb. Fantastic. Kick-ass, if you will. But one thing it was not was a mistake.

“By the way, this plan?”

“Never ran it by me.”

“I’m going with my instincts on this one.”

“It shows.”

In Dana’s head, her epiphany was like the shiny new car they gave away on The Price is Right. It sparkled under the stage lights. It was symbolic of new opportunity, new beginnings. Of stability and reliability. But the ratings guy screwed it all up.

He had her thinking. About her job, about everyone’s job. About her life. Her love life, her work life, her future. Her future with Casey, or without Casey. And suddenly this epiphany seemed like a huge mistake.

It was weird how someone could just mix your previously sunny-side-up thoughts into scrambled eggs.

“No, I don't think I do have to trust you on this. We have a magical first kiss in my office—”
“I do not deny that it was magical.”

You better not deny that it was magical because I took you off your feet, woman. I rocked you back.”

“I do not deny it.”

Dana turns to find that Casey has occupied the seat next to her while she was thinking. “Hi.”

“So, that ratings guy.”

“I know.”

Casey accepts his beer from the bartender. “He’s a jackass.”

“I know.”

“A jackass of epic proportions.”

“A world class, heavyweight champion jackass.”

Dana nods. “Sure is.”

Casey takes a sip of his beer, watching as Dana traces her finger around a coaster to her right. He can tell she’s been thinking, too. “So, this whole epiphany thing.”

“Haven’t changed my mind, Casey.”

“I know. I just… you wouldn’t be a rebound for me. You and I—we wouldn’t be a mistake.”

“I don’t think we would, either.”

“Just, after six months?”

“Why six?” Casey loosens his tie. “Seems pretty arbitrary to me. I mean, 90 days seems legitimate. And I already waited that long.”

“It’s long enough for you to experience the world of dating again, and short enough that we don’t have to wait the rest of our lives.”

Casey senses that nothing he says will sway her. “Fair enough. Six months from today?”

“From yesterday.” Dana places some cash on the bar. “It’s only fair.”

He watches as she exits, doing the math in his head.
